Many adult students of all ages have successfully started learning guitar through one-on-one lessons. Listening to virtuoso Flamenco players can be intimidating, but it's important to remember that Flamenco is, at its roots, a folk tradition, begun by people sitting around their tables singing and playing together, much like a campfire jam session. The basics of playing Flamenco can be enormously enjoyable, whatever your level of proficiency. Flamenco isn't just for the masters-it's for anyone ready to pick up a guitar and play.
A nylon string guitar is certainly preferable, but if you're not sure yet about your level of commitment, any 6 string guitar will do for initial purposes. If you're just getting started you can wait to purchase a guitar that is more specifically appropriate for Flamenco. When the time comes to look into buying an instrument, we can definitely help you find that.
Everyone's body and hands are different. But there are some basic principles we all have to adhere to when approaching playing the Flamenco guitar. While it may seem a bit awkward at first, by applying these principles with consistent practice of a few minutes a day, you'll be surprised at how quickly you can progress.
There's a reason Flamenco has always been an oral tradition. While knowing how to read music (or tab) is certainly a valuable skill, we strongly encourage our students not to utilize written tools until they have a firm foundation of the basic mechanics in place. There's already enough to be concentrating on without having our eyes glued to a written page. Moreover, our video material and online support are specifically designed to break things down in a carefully detailed manner so you can learn... step by step!
There’s an enormous amount of Flamenco guitar content online — some excellent, some less so. But no matter how good the video, it can’t replace proper instruction or the feedback of a qualified teacher. Flamenco employs extremely subtle techniques, rhythms, and details that are easy to misunderstand or overlook without expert guidance. The right instructor can ensure you’re learning correctly from the start, building habits that will serve you for years instead of holding you back.
Without that guidance, best case scenario, you’ll stall in your progress or develop techniques that are difficult to correct later. Worst case, you could develop bad physical habits that can lead to strain or injury — problems that are far easier to prevent than to fix.
Many adults hesitate to begin because they believe they’ve started too late or lack the natural ability needed to succeed at Flamenco guitar. The reality is far simpler and far more encouraging: steady, guided practice beats talent every time. When you’re given the right material in the right order, even short, focused daily practice sessions produce clear, measurable progress. Our teaching system removes confusion and overwhelm by giving you a precise path forward at every stage, so you always know exactly what to work on and how to improve. With consistent effort and proper guidance, students of all ages regularly achieve results they once thought were out of reach.
